Best 3 minutes of my life

What is it about music? Of all the entertainment sources we have to choose from, how has simple music not only survived, but flourished? Think about it. We drive to music. We work to music. Sometimes we are doing other things without even noticing the background music. Music is the background of our lives.

No doubt music is an important part of our lives. And most of us our very steadfast in our musical preferences. We know what we like and what we don't like and we don't mind telling anyone who will listen. So what is it about us that makes some music hit a chord with us and other music not? In many cases it's not a clear distinction of genre necessarily, but song by song we either "feel" it or we don't.

OK, so we know what we like. But still we are sometimes stumped by the popular question "What's your favorite song?" Here there are two types of people. Those that will answer the question with the song of the week and those that will not really answer the question at all because they cannot.

My answer to "What's your favorite song?" is "On what day?" or "Under what circumstances?" Because no matter how you are feeling, no matter what's happened or not happened to you, no matter if you are alone or not, sick or well, there is a song that will be the best 3 minutes of your life. Your favorite song is the one that touches you in just the right way at just the right moment.

Music preference is emotional, and situational. And when everything comes together at the right moment, the song will be the best 3 minutes of your life. What other medium can do that?
